Irene Thorne We have just learnt that Irene passed away in the night on the 18th
of June.
It was a tremendous shock to answer the phone the other morning and hear that Irene Thorne had passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning in Basingstoke Hospital.
She had been suffering over the previous couple of weeks.
Irene had been an Islander longer than most.
As a bowler she was a joy to watch and in her “heyday” she would produce shots you and I could only dream of.
However, it wasn’t just her bowling that we will remember her for.
One of her greatest legacies to Islanders, male and female, was her knowledge of The Laws of the Sport of Bowls.
Her marking clinics stood many an Islander in good stead and only this year she encouraged people to embark on the Marking/Umpiring road.
Over the last few years Irene has suffered from a series of ailments which meant that she did not play very much and, when she did, certainly not to the standard she had been used to.
Never the less, she always knew what needed to be done and could advise.
She and Guy had been together for 35 years – our deepest sympathies go out to Guy.
Irene’s funeral is on Monday, 27th June at West Berks Crematorium – at 3 pm
Marjorie Harvey Older members of the Island will be sorry to hear of the death of Marjorie Harvey.
Marjorie and her husband Cliff joined the island as bowlers in the latter part of the 1980's.
Cliff was at one time Saturday Captain and Marjorie supported him not only in this but when he ran the 200 club.
She was of immense help to Cliff when he started the pre-season tours, the first in 1992.
Marjorie enjoyed her bowls and played in many a friendly game against other clubs as well as competing in club competitions right up to the 1999 season.
The one thing people remember when Marjorie's name is mentioned was how smartly turned out she was from head to toe.
We send our condolences to Marjorie's family and we hope they will have many happy memories of a lovely lady.
Marjorie died on 3 January 2011.
