The Bowling Green Hedges
A number of persons have noticed that the hedges around the Island have recently been cut.
This is thanks again to Ken Edinborough, who rightly deserves a very special note of thanks for work of more than
a "professional" standard.
Peggy Rixon
Sadly we report the passing of another Islander, Peggy
Rixon.
Peggy supported the Island through many years. She was a great supporter of Ladies’ games until
a broken arm slowed her down a little and her
illness began to take its toll. If ever a lady
underestimated her bowling ability, it was
Peggy. She could lead with the best of them.
She
seemed to prefer to be a social bowler and, it
is not so many years ago that Peggy and her
little group would spend sunny afternoons
rolling up on the Island stopping only for an
afternoon cup of tea.
She was a regular at Points and social
functions, knowing all the old songs and arm
movements that went with them.
A while back when cakes and scones were a must
have at ladies’ teas, Peggy was always willing
and it is said that no one could make scones
like Peggy.
It is hard
to think of Peggy without thinking of George and
the two of them were often and even very
recently seen in Caversham. She supported George
when he was The Island’s “Mr. Fix it” and seemed
to be almost permanently on call.
Our sympathies are with George and his family at
this very sad time.
Peggy passed away on Sunday 5th of October 2008.

Violet (Vi) Starks
We have heard news of the passing of a former Island bowling member.
Vi, as she was called, died on Tuesday 22nd of January.
She was a fierce competitor, was the Ladies Singles Champion in
1991 and tended
an Island flower bed beyond an age when most would have taken a back seat.
Vi also had the most amazing sense of fun and
humour and will be sadly missed.
Condolences to Ken and family.
