Joan Lowry
Sadly we have learnt of the passing of Joan Lowry.
It is many years since Joan bowled on the Island as she left in the early 90's and took up
membership of Reading and Tilehurst clubs.
She will long be remembered for presenting the Lowry Cup to the Ladies section of our club,
for their Two Wood competition.
Joan with Jill Young won the County Ladies Pairs back in (circa 1984).
She very much supported the County, and was made a Life Member for her services, being their
Treasurer from 1983 to 2001.
Her funeral is on Thursday 2nd of November, at Reading Crematorium, at 12 noon.
George Rixon
Sadly we have to report the passing of another of The Island’s elder statesmen – George Rixon.
George had long since passed his three score years and ten and it is many years since he bowled in matches of any description.
Many of today’s Islanders will know George only as someone who, with the late Peggy, would join in on our Social evenings.
However, go back to the beginning of the nineties and, George was your man.
If it needed mending, sorting, inside or out –
George would fix it/sort it – on a shoe string as club money seemed much tighter in those days.
Many was the time he would be fixing something most of the day and then be bowling in the evening –
all without a word of complaint – either from him or from Peggy (who must have wondered if he had actually retired!).
He was also the Assistant Bowls Secretary for many years, responsible for the organising of the external
Competitions of which there were more entered than at the present time.
You cannot think of George without remembering his incredible sense of humour – he truly was an Islander with character.
George died on Friday 12th of November 2010, age 91.
His funeral is on Tuesday 23rd November, at Reading Crematorium, at 12:15.
Our sympathies to his family.

Doris Saunders
We learn that Doris Saunders (wife of President
Jo Saunders) has recently passed away.
Her funeral is at The Crematorium on March 8th at 3:15pm.
John Pyke
Sadly we have to record the passing of another Islander, John Pyke.
John was always a sportsperson, indeed as a teacher and House Master at Highdown School, he not only taught Maths but Rugby as well.
He became an Islander way back in the 80’s and quickly became an excellent bowler, playing for both Club and County.
He was a well respected Club and LX Captain in his time.
In the years 2000 & 2001, in his own words, he was honoured to be our President.
He regularly skipped for our Kennet and LX Leagues until lack of mobility and much pain prevented him from bowling as he knew he could.
Gone, but not forgotten.
Our sincere condolences to Marion and her family.
John passed away on Monday 8th of February 20010.
